PISTON - Solidarity with Nexperia workers' strike

PISTON is calling on all transport workers to stand in solidarity with the Nexperia Philippines Inc. Workers Union (NPIWU-NAFLU-KMU) and support their upcoming strike against unjust labor practices perpetuated by electronics company Nexperia Philippines Inc.

Nexperia is a multinational semiconductor company that manufactures crucial chips used in electronics and automotives, including electric vehicles. Among its high-profile clients are Huawei, Xiaomi, Samsung, and the infamous American electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla.

Since last year, Nexperia has laid off approximately 600 workers, citing accusations of “low performance”. In response, the NPIWU—affiliated with the National Federation of Labor Unions (NAFLU) and Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU)—called for a strike. An overwhelming 1,246 workers voted in favor of the action.

Despite this, management plans to lay off an additional 326 workers, with no clarity on future layoffs. A significant factor in these job cuts is the company’s move towards automation.

Recent years have seen increased automation across industries as corporations strive to keep pace with technological changes. While technology has the potential to enhance working conditions and decision-making, under the current global imperialist system, it becomes a tool for large corporations to consolidate wealth and power, threatening and violating workers’ rights.

Similar to the corporate-driven and foreign-oriented public transport modernization program, automation and technological advancements are often exported to developing nations like the Philippines, reinforcing the dominance of imperialist powers.

In this critical time, unions play an indispensable role in shaping the future of work.

NPIWU’s strike occurs against a backdrop of growing unrest among workers and the public, as the Marcos Jr. regime prioritizes profit and imperialist war games over workers’ rights and the public’s urgent need for better social protection amidst rising costs of living.

We urge all transport workers and commuters to support the upcoming Nexperia workers’ strike. We have proven that our collective actions result to collective victories! Let us all fight for a future where technology serves humanity—not the ruling class.
