PISTON: Adding 100k TNVS will not solve transport woes, cannot solve job crisis

Transport group PISTON warned the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) that opening up 100,000 slots for Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) cannot solve the current transport crisis and the growing demand for public transport as this will just increase the volume of cars in Metro Manila roads without efficiently enabling the mobility of a huge number of passengers in the least number of vehicles per kilometer possible.

This move by the LTFRB came after Marcos Jr, on February 2, met with officials from Grab Holdings Inc. who pledged 500,000 jobs from potential transport investments.

The group said that deploying thousands of TNVS is a band-aid solution to the country’s broken public mass transportation system. Transport efficiency that ensures the mobility of a greater number of people should be at the core of the development of public mass transport systems, especially in urban areas like Metro Manila. Efficient mobility for big numbers of people reduces fuel and transport costs and potentially makes public transport more affordable for the majority of the population.
