PISTON filed motion to resolve the pending application for a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP) before the Supreme Court today during the nationwide transport strike.
Despite government claims of “80% consolidation,” the extensions granted by LTFRB cast doubt on the success of the consolidation. However, PISTON argues that these extensions do not address the core issues and continue to pose a threat to the livelihoods of thousands of PUV drivers and operators.
Additionally, the Senate has expressed its support for suspending the implementation of the PTMP and has raised concerns about social justice and the livelihoods of stakeholders.
“If the LTFRB only knows about extensions, what is stopping the them from simply scrapping the entire program instead of repeatedly deceiving and misleading us under the government of Marcos Jr.?” said PISTON National President Mody Floranda.
The ongoing transport strike led by PISTON and Manibela aims to further highlight the failures and burdens caused by the PTMP both on those who resist the program and on those who have complied with the program.
According to PISTON, today’s strike was able to paralyze around 90% of major routes in Metro Manila.
“Our strike will continue as planned tomorrow, and our protests will not end as long as the government continues its oppressive policies and practices against the people,” added Floranda.
