Transport strikes win key concession: Marcos Jr’s modernization policy in shambles as ‘hidden’ LTFRB Reso reveals failure of franchise consolidation

PISTON transport strikes

The Marcos Jr regime’s refusal to admit that the widespread transport strikes of 2024 forced their hand is nothing short of cowardice. Let’s be clear: these strikes compelled them to allow a limited number of unconsolidated PUVs to continue operating.

On April 30, 2024, at the height of our strikes against the forced consolidation scheme, the LTFRB secretly issued Board Resolution 53 Series of 2024. This resolution, permitting unconsolidated PUVs to operate on low-consolidation routes, is a direct result of transport workers’ collective actions and relentless pressure.

The Marcos Jr administration, with its incompetence and underhanded tactics, has proven beyond doubt the power and necessity of strikes and protests. No amount of rebranding, lies, or deception can obscure the truth: this inept, corrupt, and subservient regime will bend over backwards to appease its ruling class allies and foreign capitalist masters.

Our strikes and protests have forced the LTFRB and the Marcos Jr regime to concede. This is a clear victory for Filipino transport workers who are being trampled on by greedy corporations salivating to take over our public transport system.

However, our fight is far from over. We will not rest until we’ve completely dismantled this corporate and foreign-oriented modernization program.

Our message to the regime is clear: your half-measures and reluctant concessions will not satisfy. We demand a complete junking of the modernization program and an implementation of a progressive, nationalist, and people-centric public transport system.

With the state of Philippine politics and economy showing cracks under the current system as we head towards his third SONA and eventually the midterm elections, Marcos Jr should expect more resistance not only from the transport sector but from the entire Filipino people.
